Photo by George Barnard (Library of Congress)

Right off the coast of Charleston lies Fort Sumter, where the first battle of the American Civil war took place.

The view of Circular Church today in google street view. https://goo.gl/maps/XDvPcdTofiBrJqck8

Bird’s eye view of the damage the great fire of 1861 and the war brought to Charleston, you can see the colorized photo was taken by the first pillar of the church. Only the harbour area was reduced to rubble, fortunately most of the city survived the war.

The photographer grabbed some boys off the street to pose for the photo, A woman is seen in the background carrying her goods, slightly blurred by the long exposure.
