Carl and his colleague Arthur Rothstein travelled across Vermont to visit the various county fairs in Albany, Craftsbury, Essex Junction, Morrisville, and Rutland, documenting the spectacle. The local communities carried out various parades, games (such as barrel race, three-legged race), midway attractions and horse races.
