Charleston, South Carolina is a port city founded in 1670, defined by its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and pastel antebellum houses.

Looking at the grand clock we can tell this particular photograph was taken at 3:48 PM in the afternoon, and judging by the long shadows cast by the buildings - the sun setting in the west, and the particularly layered clothing of the people walking by, we can assume this photo was probably taken during wintertime.

Two suave men stand at the corner of the street. Another man walking by himself down the road, noticing the camera. Behind him there is a curious tool shop, filled with all kinds of brooms, dusters, pots, whiskers and ladles hanging in the window. Out front two rolled up hoses are for sale, and a horse saddle sits on top of one.

Automobile! I assume CHAS is short for Charleston? The ladies have style, and their own chauffeur.

Charleston in the distance. Busy with horse wagons, cars, and bicycles. In the distance we see St Matthews Lutheran Church, with its original red steeple roof and white stone exterior. It burned down in the 1930s and withstood a hurricane in 1989.

The church in 1883, with the original stonework in Arabic ablac style.

Further down the street. A man on a horse-drawn wagon speak to a woman holding on to her bicycle. There is a second bicycle parked behind the foremost wagon too!

People walking down the street. The storefront windows are filled with goods and wares for sale. To the right a woman and man are having a lively discussion.

The building at 253 King Street is still intact with gorgeous architecture today: https://goo.gl/maps/yEsyVtJ59By6w5Nb7 According to the Jeweler’s website this building was at first a bank building, and as we can see in the full size photo it was a savings bank in 1910.

King Street today.
