These men might belong to the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, or the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin – both are considered to be of the Ho-Chunk peoples. Dressed in their regalia, they look out over one of the many cliffs surrounding ‘the Dells of Wisconsin’, a scenic, glacial-formed gorge that features sandstone formations along the banks of the Wisconsin River.

It was a popular tourist destination for many Americans, and the Winnebago would perform their music and dances for tourists who arrived by steamboat.
